General description

Aluminum oxide (Alumina) was used as an adsorbent in TLC. It can be prepared by calcination of aluminium hydroxide in moderate temperature followed by washing. The adsorbent is backed on glass plates to perform TLC.
It is also evident that the amount of water affects the chromatographic behavior of alumina during TLC. There are three types:
a. Acidic
b. Basic
c. Neutral
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a thermoplastic polymer resin. It is used on TLC plates as it prevents the chemical reagents to diffuse into the polymer matrix. The chemical degradation of PET is not easy.
Aluminum oxide- basic alumina, for separation of hormones and antibiotics

Application

Aluminum oxide on TLC-PET foils may be used for TLC and HPTLC.
