General description

Phthalic acid is an organic acid and a major bioactive component, reportedly identified in the extracts of Solanum nigrum, Nigella sativa, Angelicae Radix and Ligustici Rhizoma, utilized as Chinese herbal medicines.

Application

Phthalic acid may be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in the following:
  • Angelicae Radix and Ligustici Rhizoma using high performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC-PDA) followed by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) analyses.
  • Nigella sativa and Solanum nigrum using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
