Application

Aluminum chloride hexahydrate has been used to prepare aluminum maltol and to study its toxicity in rabbits.[1]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Aluminum chloride hexahydrate possess antimicrobial activity, when used in an aqueous form in an antiperspirant formulation.[2] Aluminum chloride can stimulate neurofibrillary changes in neurons of spinal cord and cerebrum in the developing rabbit′s brain.[3]

Preparation Note

1 gm of aluminum chloride hexahydrate dissolves in 0.9 ml water and 4 ml of alcohol. It is also soluble in glycerol, ether and propylene glycol.

To document deodorant efficacy the antimicrobial activity of a gelatinous antiperspirant formulation of aqueous aluminum chloride hexahydrate was investigated. In vitro assays demonstrated highly bactericidal activity on microorganisms comprising the resident axillary skin flora, including micrococcaceae and aerobic diphtheroid bacteria.
