Gene Information

General description

Placenta growth factor (PGF, PIGF, PGFL, or PLGF) is a secreted protein primarily produced by placental trophoblast tissues but also expressed in other endothelial tissues and cancers. There are three isoforms, PGF-1, PGF-2, and PGF-3 (PIGF-1, PIGF-2, PIGF-3). PGF-2 is expressed up until week 8 in the placenta; PGF-1 and PGF-3 are continuously expressed by the placental tissues but only PGF-1 is found in colon and mammary carcinomas. PGF acts to stimulate angiogenesis, endothelial growth and migration. PGF is a powerful promoter of tumor growth and is upregulated in some cancers, and PGF is thought to aid in atherosclerotic lesions and neovascular growth surrounding the lesion. Also, PGF appears to aid aldosterone mediated atherosclerosis. Serum levels of PGF can be measured and in some cases used as a potential biomarker for disease or genetic defect. Recent research indicates that PGF levels are lower in mothers with Down syndrome fetuses, and when combined with additional tests PGF data helps lower the false positive detection rate in blood tests.

Immunogen

Western Blotting Analysis: A 1:1,000 dilution from a representative lot detected PLGF in A431, HepG2, Jurkat, and PC3 cell lysate.

Quality

Evaluated by Western Blotting in HEK293T cell lysate.

Western Blotting Analysis: 1 µg/mL of this antibody detected PLGF in 10 µg of HEK293T cell lysate.

Target description

~19 kDa observed. The calculated molecular weight is 25 kDa (PLGF-3), 19 kDa (PLGF-1) and 17 kDa (PIGF-2). While the three isoforms are present in most placental tissues, PIGF-2 (17 kDa) is specific to early (8 week) placenta, whereas PlGF-1 (19 kDa) is only found in colon and mammary carcinomas. Ths protein can be N-glycosylated. PIGF can form homodimer or heterodimer with VEDF, which can be observed in human brain tissue lysates. Uncharacterized band(s) may be observed in some cell lysates.
