General description

RBM4 is a widely expressed RNA-binding factor involved in many cellular process, including alternative splicing of pre-mRNA and translation regulation by modulating alternative 5′-splice site and exon selection on target hnRNA. RBM4 plays roles in development, particularly muscle cell development, clock metabolism and cellular stress. In muscle, RBM4 acts as a muscle cell differentiation-promoting factor and activates exon skipping of the PTB pre-mRNA during muscle cell differentiation, and it antagonizes the activity of the splicing factor PTBP1 to modulate muscle cell-specific exon selection of alpha tropomyosin. RBM4 also mediates various mRNA functions important for myocytes, and RBM4 associates with important miRNAs that are important for muscle cell differentiation. RBM4 is also involved in regulation of the biological clock because it is required for the translational activation of PER1 mRNA in response to circadian clock. In cellular stress, RBM4 recruits EIF4A1 to stimulate IRES-dependent translation initiation in response to cellular stress, and RBM4 associates to internal ribosome entry segment (IRES) in target mRNA species under stress conditions.
