General description

GHB, or γ-hydroxybutyrate, is a central nervous system depressant sold under the brand name Xyrem® and used medically to treat narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness and in rare circumstances, alcoholism. GHB is also used recreationally as an intoxicant and date rape drug. Its many street names include “GBH”, “Liquid X”, “G”, “Juice”, and “Mils”.

Application

  • GHB sodium salt in sleep disorder research: A study on nocturnal sodium oxybate, a form of GHB sodium salt, revealed an increase in the anterior cingulate cortex magnetic resonance glutamate signal upon awakening, suggesting its potential application in modulating brain function in sleep research (Dornbierer et al., 2023).

  • Investigation of GHB Na+ in alcohol-addiction treatment: Research focusing on the effect of the sodium salt of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) for alcohol-addiction treatment, it is effective in maintaining abstinence, with less craving for alcohol and lower rates of relapse (Frisoni et al., 2023).

  • Gamma-hydroxybutyrate sodium for in vitro biochemical assays: A detailed study on the pharmacokinetics and metabolism of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) in rats perturbed by alcohol, offers a model for in vitro studies examining GHB′s biochemical behavior and interaction with alcohol (Kim et al., 2023).
