General description

12:0 Diether PC (phosphocholine) is a glycerophospholipid having two dodecane chains attached to the sn-1 and sn-2 positions of the glycerol backbone by ether bonds. It has choline as the alcohol moiety, attached to the phosphate group.[1]

Application

12:0 Diether PC or 1,2-di-O-dodecyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine might be used in small micelles for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments to study the interaction of peptide with model membranes.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

12:0 Diether PC (phosphocholine) is found to be a simpler membrane model and is highly compatible with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).[2] It is useful in bicelles formation. Bicelles can be integrated into standard crystallization protocols and in contrast to micelles, bicelles maintain the protein in a more native bilayer environment allowing proteins to be captured in a more biologically relevant orientation.
