General description

16:0-18:1 Diether PC or 1-O-hexadecanyl-2-O-(9Z-octadecenyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine is a class of glycerophospholipids that have hexadecane and octadecene chains attached to the sn-1 and sn-2 positions of the glycerol backbone respectively by ether bonds. It has choline as the alcohol moiety, attached to the phosphate group. Ether lipids contribute to one fifth of the total phospholipids in mammals. They are abundantly present in the brain, spleen, heart and white blood cells. Ether lipids are components of biological membrane structure.[1]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ether lipids influence membrane fluidity and membrane fusion. They are known to be efficient antioxidant, present inside our body and helps in reducing oxidative stress. Studies show that ether lipids are associated with cell differentiation and cellular signaling.[1]

Ether lipids, such as plasmalogens, are peroxisome-derived glycerophospholipids in which the hydrocarbon chain at the sn-1 position of the glycerol backbone is attached by an ether bond, as opposed to an ester bond in the more common diacyl phospholipids. This
