General description

Anandamide (AEA) is an endogenous ligand for cannabinoid receptors.[1] It is an N-acyl ethanolamide derivative of C20,4 fatty acid.[2] AEA is a lipid neurotransmitter. It is synthesized and released by the neurons in the brain and macrophages.[3] AEA is a lipophilic and poorly water-soluble compound.[4] Anandamide phosphate (pAEA) is dephosphorylated by phosphatase to yield anandamide.{56)

Biochem/physiol Actions

Anandamide (AEA) is involved in many physiological and pathophysiological functions, such as regulation of energy consumption and balance. It also plays an important role in initiation and control of inflammation and modulatory effects on sensory and autonomic nerve signaling.[2]
