General description

C18:1 Ceramide (d17:1/18:1(9Z)) is a synthetic ceramide containing C17 analog of sphingosine with oleic acid.[1] It is the key component of cell membranes.[2]

Application

C18:1 Ceramide (d17:1/18:1(9Z)) has been used as an internal standard to quantify ceramides in muscles by Agilent 6460 triple quadrupole mass spectrometry.[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ceramides acts as a precursor for various sphingolipids. Ceramides play an important role in cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. In addition, it also acts as a secondary transmitter in cell signaling.[2] C18 species of ceramide is particularly involved in cell growth inhibition.[4]
