General description

C2 Ceramide (N-acetoyl-D-erythro-sphingosine) is a synthetic ceramide analog.[1] It is cell-permeable in nature.[1][2] C2 Ceramide belongs to the class of short chain ceramides, also known as the soluble swelling amphiphiles.[3] It is widely present in foods ranging from eggs to soybeans.[4]

Application

C2 Ceramide (d17:1/2:0) has been used as an internal standard in tandem mass spectrometry for sphingolipid analysis.[5]

Biochem/physiol Actions

C2 Ceramide (C2-Cer) has an ability to mediate internucleosomal DNA fragmentation.[1] It is implicated in steroidogenic pathway.[2] C2 Ceramide has a potential to transform edible oil in to self-standing organogels without any saturated or trans fats supplements.[4] Short chain ceramides will remain intact with liquid-crystalline phospholipids and they facilitate the formation of positive curvature in lipid membranes. These ceramides are usually used as a substitutes for long-chain Cer in various biological experimentation with living cells.[3]
