General description

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a strong bilayer-forming lipid. It the most common phospholipid in mammalian membranes.[1] It is also an important component of the mucosal layer of the colon.[2]
The list of Phosphatidylcholine products offered by Avanti is designed to provide compounds having a variety of physical properties. Products available include short chain (C3-C8 are water soluble and hygroscopic), saturated, multi-unsaturated and mixed acid PC′s. All of the products are purified by HPLC, and special precautions are taken to protect the products for oxidization and hydrolysis.

Application

16:1 (Δ9-Trans) PC is suitable for use to investigate its role in cell proliferation.[3] It is also suitable for use as a neutral or helper lipid to study the interplay of liposomal composition, physicochemical characteristics and fusion capacity.[4]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) functions as a surfactant within the mucus to form a hydrophobic surface to inhibit bacterial penetrance.[2] It is used to treat fat embolism. Phosphatidylcholine lowers the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.[5]
