General description

Phosphatidylcholine represents 58% of phospholipids in the mammalian membranes. It is accumulated in axon.[1] It is the first amphiphiles to be discovered.[2]
The list of Phosphatidylcholine products offered by Avanti is designed to provide compounds having a variety of physical properties. Products available include short chain (C3-C8 are water soluble and hygroscopic), saturated, multi-unsaturated and mixed acid PC′s. All of the products are purified by HPLC, and special precautions are taken to protect the products for oxidization and hydrolysis.

Application

14:1 (Δ9-Trans) PC (1,2-dimyristelaidoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) has been used as an internal standard during lipid extraction from various samples for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC),[3] 2D liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)[4][5] and spectrophotometric analysis.[6] It has also been used in the preparation of bicelles and mixed with amphiphiles for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies.[7]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is the key component in the eukaryotic cell membranes.[8] PC is a major component in rat peritoneal surface. It aids in peritoneal solute transport and water ultrafiltration in rat.[6] The signaling pathway of PC is implicated in bile metabolism and glucose homeostasis.[2] PC functions as a neurotrophin like factor and regulates neuronal plasticity and cell fate.[1] Perturbation of PC homeostasis is known to cause many neurodegenerative disorders.[8]
