General description

Pyrene is made up of four fused benzol rings. It is an apolar molecule.[1] Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), a phospholipid is found abundantly in mammalian cells. It is especially abundant in the inner mitochondrial membrane.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) can serve as a lipid chaperone. It plays a key role in the activity of respiratory complexes. PE also participates in the initiation of autophagy.[2] Pyrene-labeled phospholipids (Pyr-PE) can be used in lactose permease membrane embedding studies.[3]
