General description

Phytosphingosine is a glycolipid component, present in the intestine of vertebrates.[1] It belongs to the class of sphingolipids.[2] It is seen at high level in plants and fungi. Phytosphingosine is also abundantly present in the epidermis of mammals.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phytosphingosine helps to protect the skin by preventing the loss of its moisture. It plays a key role in the epidermal cell growth, differentiation and cell death. Phytosphingosine exhibits bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties. Phytosphingosine modulates the synthesis of lipid in the epidermal stratum corneum. It is capable of blocking nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling.[2] Phytosphingosine is known to participate in the differentiation of keratinocytes.[3]
