General description
Biochem/physiol Actions
Sphingosine is a product of de-acylation of ceramide.[2] Many studies have indicated that sphingosine mediates processes like senescence, apoptosis and differentiation by functioning as a tumor-suppressor lipid.[5] The addition of sphingosine to cell culture media is known to activate stress-activated protein kinases (SAPKs) such as Jun amino-terminal kinases (JNK) and p38, and inhibit the activity of the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs), extracellular signal-regulated kinases (Erk-1 and Erk-2).[2]
