General description

C6-NBD Galactosyl Ceramide is a fluorescent derivative of biologically active compound galactosyl ceramide. NBD (2-(4-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-7-yl) aminoethyl) is a fluorophore. Galactosyl ceramide (Galactocerebroside) is produced in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum.

Application

C6-NBD Galactosyl Ceramide may be used as a substrate for neutral β -glycosylceramidase (GCase) activity assay.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Galactosyl ceramide (GC) is a glycosphingolipid and precursor of 3′-sulfo-galactosylceramide, a major sulfoglycolipid present in the brain and other organs. Galactosyl ceramide belongs to a new class of immunomodulators and vaccine adjuvants that are known to stimulate natural killer T (NKT) cells to increase secretion of T helper type 1 (Th1) and T-helper type 2 (Th2) cytokines. The excess accumulation of GC is related to diseased condition such as Krabbe′s disease.
