General description

Phosphatidic acid (PA) is an anionic membrane phospholipid constituting 1-4% of membrane lipids.[1] It contains a phosphomonoester polar head group and two long hydrophobic acyl chains.[1] NBD PA is a fluorescently labeled lipid with 7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-yl (NBD) at the sn-2 fatty acid of PA.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidic acid (PA) plays a vital role as a signaling molecule in the regulation of cellular processes including cell proliferation, survival, cytoskeletal organization, vesicular trafficking, secretion and reproduction.[1] It acts as a parent compound to generate other phospholipids.[3]

Phosphatidic acid (PA) is the simplest cellular glycerophospholipid characterized by unique biophysical properties: a small headgroup; negative charge; and a phosphomonoester group. Upon interaction with lysine or arginine, PA charge increases from -1 to -2 and this change stabilizes protein-lipid
