General description
Human serum albumin (HSA) is a monomeric multi-domain protein present in abundance in human plasma. It is localized on human chromosome 4q11-22. HSA comprises 585 amino acids and is isolated by the fractionation method from human plasma. Recombinant HSA is produced by using bacterial, yeast and plant host.[1] The Huzzah™ lipid delivery system is supplied as a lyophilized conjugate which can be directly and easily reconstituted in water or a buffer of choice and is ideal for studying the effects of poorly soluble bioactive molecules.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Human serum albumin (HSA) functions as a carrier protein and binds various ligands. It is the major carrier protein for fatty acids.[1] The nonimmunogenic nature of HSA is exploited in coating liposomes for the generation of HSA-lipoplexes for transfection studies.[2] Avanti′s new HSA lipid delivery system, Huzzah™, employs HSA as a conjugate and a carrier protein. HSA conjugates are effective in lipid delivery studies. Huzzah™ system control HSA is devoid of microbial artefacts and has endotoxin levels less than 1 IU/mL.[3]
