Natural occurrence: hawleyite (structural type of sphalerite) and greenockite (structural type of wurtzite)
Application
Applications: pigment in the chemical industry; photoresistors; optical-electronic pairs, photodiodes, solar batteries; phosphors. Single crystals of cadmium sulfide are used for the preparation of optical devices operating in the infrared regaion of spectrum. Cadmium sulfide is a direct band gap semiconductor with a band gap band from 2.42 to 2.57 eV.
CdS nanowires were synthesized from CdS powder.[1]

A reusable potassium ion biosensor was reported for the first time based on the reversible DNA structural change and the interaction between surface plasmons of Au nanoparticles (NPs) and the ECL emission of CdS nanocrystals (NCs).
Wide wavelength range (550-1600 nm) measurements of nonlinear optical properties of ca. 5 nm CdS quantum dots (QDs) colloidal solution were performed using the Z-scan technique with femtosecond laser pulses at 1 kHz. Parameters characterizing nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction
High particle uniformity, high photoluminescence quantum yields, narrow and symmetric emission spectral lineshapes and minimal single-dot emission intermittency (known as blinking) have been recognized as universal requirements for the successful use of colloidal quantum dots in nearly all optical applications.
