General description

Phosphoglyceride (PG) are also referred as glycerophospholipid. It is an important component of membrane bilayers. It has three-carbon backbone of glycerol, two long-chain fatty acids, esterified to hydroxyl groups on carbons 1 and 2 of the glycerol and phosphoric acid esterified to the C3 hydroxyl group of glycerol. It is found at high levels in the membranes of all cells and at low levels in fat stores. 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1′-rac-glycerol) (DOPG)/18:1 (Δ9-Cis) PG has two hydroxyl groups in its head group. It is an anionic lipid.

Application

  • Probing the extended lipid anchorage with cytochrome c and liposomes containing diacylphosphatidylglycerol lipids.: This study investigates the interactions of cytochrome c with liposomes containing diacylphosphatidylglycerol (PG) lipids, including 18:1 (Δ9-Cis) PG. The research provides insights into the lipid anchorage and membrane dynamics, which are crucial for understanding cellular processes and developing biotechnological applications involving lipid-protein interactions (Abbott et al., 2018).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphoglycerides (PG)/glycerophospholipids play a key role in cell signaling systems. It also serves as an anchor for proteins in cell membranes.
