General description

Research area: Cell Signaling
Thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) is a tripeptide hypothalamic regulatory hormone, encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 3q13.3-q21. TRH is expressed in a variety of organs including central nervous system (CNS) and gastrointestinal tract, prostate, pancreas, thyroid, heart.

Application

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone has been used as a media supplement to study its effects on stimulating the secretion of prolactin (PRL) from somatolactotroph GH3 cells by enzyme immunometric assay. It has also been used to study its effects on the regulation of energy homeostasis in the central nervous system (CNS) in response to essential amino-acid deprivation.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) stimulates production and secretion of thyrotropin (TSH) and prolactin from the anterior pituitary.
It also plays a vital role as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone modulates human hair follicle functions and plays a vital role in stimulating hair growth.TRH receptor activated by TRH activates various signal transduction pathways, which mediates the formation of two-second messenger molecules, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate, and 1,2-diacylglycerol. TRH expressed in pancreatic β cells aids in the positive regulation of insulin secretion.
Stimulates the production of thyrotropin (TSH) and its secretion from the anterior pituitary.

Activation of TRH receptors (TRH-R) stimulates a signal transduction pathway that leads to the formation of two second messenger molecules, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate and 1,2-diacylglycerol. It has been suggested that TRH may also cause an elevation of another second messenger, cAMP.
