General description

(3-Glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) is a bifunctional organosilane with three methoxy groups on one side and an epoxy ring on the other. The methoxy groups bind well with glass substrates creating a 3D matrix. The epoxy group is reactive with amides, alcohols, thiols and acids. GPTMS is highly reactive in water and can be used as a linking agent between the surface of the silica and the polymeric matrix.[1][2][3]

Application

GPTMS is widely used as a silica precursor. GPTMS alone with tetraethylortosilicate (TEOS) can be blended with chitosan for use as a filler for polymeric scaffold for bone tissue engineering.[4] It can also be coated on the surface of aluminium alloy to protect from corrosion.[5] GPTMS can used to functionalize (wrap) multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) which can be used as s a reinforcement in epoxy matrix nanocomposites.[2]
Pre-treatment of carbon steel with 3-(Glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane enhances the dry and wet adhesion while reducing the cathotic disbondment rate of an epoxy coating[6]

Questions

1–9 of 9 Questions
  1. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. I would like to know the solvent for GPTMS. What solvents does GPTMS dispersed in?

    1 answer
    1. This product is supplied as a neat or pure liquid with a density of 1.07 g/mL. The minimum purity is 98%. This compound is soluble in water, alcohols, acetone, and most aliphatic esters at normal application levels of 45%.

      Helpful?

  4. I connected  GPTMS synthetically to my lipid(APTES), now my lipid cannot be dissolved in chloroform, ethanol and methanol solutions, which was previously dissolved, what solvent should I use?

    1 answer
    1. The solubility of the GPTMS/APTES sample has not been tested, however decreasing the concentration in chloroform may be useful. Other solvents such as oils (see C8267) or a strong base, such as sodium hydroxide, may also be an option. See the link below to a publication that may be of interest:
