Application

Dimethyl sulfoxide has been used:
  • in the preparation of bisphenol A (BPA)[1]
  • in cell proliferation assay (MTT assay)[2]
  • in chemosensitivity assay[3]
  • as the vehicle control in all experiments like apoptosis assay[4]
  • in ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylation (EROD) assay[5]

Biochem/physiol Actions

DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), an organic solvent possesses several pharmaceutical activities such as analgesic, diuretic, bacteriostatic, membrane-penetrant, anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory and cholinesterase inhibitory effects.[6] It is a by-product of the lumber industry and used as an industrial solvent. DMSO also serves as a therapeutic agent to treat interstitial cystitis and arthritis.[7]

Caution

Supercools easily and remelts slowly at room temperature. Solidified product can be re-liquified by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.

Questions

1–10 of 11 Questions
  1. Can I use this product (suitable for plant cell culture) for cyropreservation of mammalian cells? Does cryopreservation of mammalian cells require sterile-filtered DMSO?

    1 answer
    1. D4540 is listed as suitable for cryopreservation.
However, D2650 is already pre-sterile and has documentation with a protocol for cryopreservation of human and animal cell lines.

  2. Can I autoclave this product?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO is not autoclavable in neat form. It is highly unlikely that microorganisms would survive in this environment. Should sterilization be necessary a PTFE, Polypropylene, or Nylon filter membrane are recommended for sterile-filtration.

      Helpful?

  3. What is the DMSO dissolved in?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO is not dissolved in any solvent. It is a pure chemical compound that is a liquid at room temperature.

  4. What concentration of DMSO do I use in a cell freezing media?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO is usually used at 1-10%, depending on the cell line.  For the cell freezing media that we offer, it is used at 8.7% concentration.

      Helpful?

  5. Does DMSO have any synthetic utility?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO has been used to oxidize thiols and disulfides to sulfonic acids, hydrolysis of epoxides, thioalkylation of phenols, and oxidation of primary alcohols and halides, and esters of primary alcohols to aldehydes.

      Helpful?

  6. What type of filter is used to sterile-filter Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO can be sterile-filtered through a 0.2 micron PTFE filter. The sterility testing is per the current US Pharmacopoeia method.

      Helpful?

  7. Where does DMSO come from?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO is known to have been isolated from tree bark in the past. It is now a commericially synthesized solvent.

  8. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

    1 answer
    1. Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.

      Helpful?

  9. What is the molarity of DMSO?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO will have a molarity of 14.1M, based on a density of 1.1 g/mL and a molecular weight of 78.13 g/mol.

      Helpful?

  10. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) should be a liquid.  Why did it arrive as a solid?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO supercools easily, and re-melts slowly at room temperature. The melting point is 16-19 °C. The solidified product can be re-liquefied by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.
