General description

Titanium(IV) chloride participates in the Baylis-Hillman reaction of arylaldehydes with methyl vinyl ketone. Neutral solutions of TiCl4 having a pH in the range of 2.5 to 6.0 (prepared by the addition of magnesium oxide as a base) have been used for the synthesis of nanosized titanium dioxide.

Application

Activates pyrrolidines for improved conversion, via a modified Bouveault reaction, to the corresponding α,α-dimethylamines.
Along with sodium borohydride, it forms an effective reagent for the reduction of:
  • carboxylic acid and acyl chloride to alcohols
  • carboxamides, oximes and lactams to amines
  • sulfoxides to sulfides
Titanium(IV) chloride (TiCl4) has been used as a precursor for the synthesis of Ag-TiO2@polyethylene glycol (PEG) nanoparticles. TiCl4 may also be used as one of the constituents to synthesize TiO2/Al2O3 binary oxide materials and N-(10-oxo-vinylanthracen-9-(10H)-ylidene)cyanamide.
