General description

The complement system consists of many plasma proteins that assist, or complement, the ability of phagocytic cells and antibodies to clear pathogens. Although it is part of the innate immune system, it can be recruited and activated by the adaptive immune system. The complement proteins and glycoproteins that are synthesized primarily by hepatocytes normally circulate as inactive pro-proteins. Once stimulated the result of the cascade is a massive amplification of response and activation of the membrane attack complex (C5b-9), which forms a transmembrane pore causing osmotic lysis of target cells. The complement pathway may also form soluble C5b-9, as well as intermediate isoforms, stabilized by regulatory proteins. These soluble complexes are unable to insert into the lipid membrane, and their role in complement pathways is an area of ongoing research.

Research category : Inflammation & Immunology
Research sub-category : Inflammation & Autoimmune Mechanisms; Inflammation

Specificity

Cross-Reactivity between C5b-9 and other complement proteins found in MILLIPLEX® Human Complement Expanded panel 1 (Cat. No. HCMPEX1-19K) and MILLIPLEX® Human Complement Panel 2 (Cat. No. HCMP2MAG-19K) was tested. There was no or negligible cross-reactivity between the antibody pair in this panel for any of the analytes tested.

Application

MILLIPLEX® Human Complement C5b-9 – Singleplex Magnetic Bead Panel is a Singleplex kit to be used for the quantification of the following analyte in serum, plasma, or cell culture supernatant samples: C5b-9 (Membrane Attack Complex, Terminal Complement Complex).
