General description

A cell-permeable indole compound that, when added (10 µM) to murine D3ES ESC (embryonic stem cell) cultures in the absence of serum and MEF (murine embryonic fibroblast) feeder cells, serves as a cheaper, chemical alternative to LIF (1,000 units/ml) for expanding ESCs in their undifferentiated state. Long-term murine ESCs maintained under ID-8 are capable of differentiating and EBs (Embryoid Bodies) formation upon ID-8 removal. Also claimed to maintain human ESCs in their pluripotent state in the absence of MEF.

Embryonic stem cells (ESCs), which have characteristics such as self-renewal, indefinite proliferation, and pluripotency, are thought to hold great promise for regenerative medicine. ESCs are generally cultured on mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) or MEF conditioned medium (MEF-CM). However, for therapeutic
