General description

Twenty identified cytokeratins make up a complex family of intermediate filaments.1 Cytokeratin 5 (58kDa) & cytokeratin 6 (56kDa) are type II high molecular weight keratins that are expressed in a broad range of normal tissues including breast, prostate, mesothelium, skin and esophagus.1-3 Anti-Cytokeratin 5 & 6 is a useful immunohistochemical marker in the identification of mesothelioma and lung squamous cell carcinoma.1

R Lersch et al.
Molecular and cellular biology, 9(9), 3685-3697 (1989-09-01)
The mitotically active basal layers of most stratified squamous epithelia express 10 to 30% of their total protein as keratin. The two keratins specifically expressed in these cells are the type II keratin K5 (58 kilodaltons) and its corresponding partner

The human type II keratin 6 (K6; 56 kDa) is expressed in a heterogeneous array of epithelial tissues under normal conditions, but is better known for its strong induction in stratified epithelia that feature an enhanced cell proliferation rate or

The immunohistochemical diagnosis of mesothelioma is commonly made by using a battery of antibodies that reacts with lung adenocarcinomas but not with epithelial mesotheliomas. Only recently have markers that are often expressed in mesotheliomas but not in adenocarcinomas been recognized.
