General description

Research area: Cell signaling

Hexokinase and Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydrogenase are intracellular enzymes found distributed widely in the living cells.[1]
Enzyme Commission numbers 2.7.1.1 + 1.1.1.49

Application

Hexokinase and Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydrogenase from baker′s yeast (S. cerevisiae) has been used to evaluate the adenylate kinase (Adk), activities of the mutant Adk’s.[1] It has also been used for the determination of glucose and ATP.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Hexokinase initiates the glycolysis pathway by catalyzing the phosphorylation of glucose to Glucose-6-phosphate in the presence of ATP. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase plays a role in the subsequent oxidation of Glucose-6-phosphate in the presence of triphosphopyridine nucleotide (TPN). Hexokinase and Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydrogenase both serve as a tool in biochemical and analytical studies for determining glucose, fructose, mannose, ATP, and creatin-kinase activity.[3]
