General description

Cholecystokinin (CCK) belongs to the gastrointestinal hormone family.[1] It is a neuropeptide hormone and neurotransmitter usually present in gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the central nervous system (CNS).[2] It is produced by neurons, and endocrine cells.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cholecystokinin (CCK) functions include, trophic effects on pancreas, gall bladder contraction, intestinal motility, and bowel movements. It has roles in various neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders. CCK is satiety peptide and regulates apettite for a short duration. Overproduction of CCK is prominent in metastatic endocrine tumors, and hence it is recognize as a diagnostic marker.
