2-Mercaptoethanesulfonic acid salts (Coenzyme M potassium salt, MESK) are used as an antioxidant and cytoprotective agent in a wide variety of applications from protection from toxicity of therapeutic agents, such as cyclophosphamide and to prevention of brain injury damage.

Metabolite in microbial metabolism in diverse environments and methane metabolism ; methanogens use 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate (CoM; coenzyme M) as the terminal methyl carrier in methano-genesis; can be determined with chemiluminescence detection by flow injection analysis.
