General description

Antifoam Y-30 Emulsion is an aqueous emulsion containing 30% active silicon. It contains non-ionic emulsifiers different from those in Antifoam Emulsions B and C. It is designed to control foam in aqueous systems.
Antifoam is also known as defoamer. It is a chemical additive that reduces and hinders the formation of foam in industrial process liquids. It is used to prevent formation of foam or is added to break foam that is already formed.

Application

Antifoam Y-30 Emulsion is used for the following applications:
  • Chemostat cultivation.[1]
  • Cultivation conditions, such as Fed-batch fermentation.[2][3]
  • Bacterial strains and growth conditions (used in all aerosol experiments).[4]

Other Notes

A 30% aqueous emulsion of Antifoam A concentrate.

Linkage

More easily dispersed in aqueous systems than Antifoam A concentrate.

Questions

1–7 of 7 Questions
  1. Are Antifoam A (product number 10794) and Antifoam Y-30 (product number A5758) the same product? Can I use Antifoam Y-30 (product number A5758) as a replacement for Antifoam A (product number 10794)?

    1 answer
    1. The A5758, Antifoam Y-30, is a 30% solution containing non-ionic emulsifiers. It is prepared from an Antifoam A product that does not contain emulsifiers. The 10794, Antifoam A, is a deleted product, but was also a 30% solution containing emulsifiers. These products are from different brands, but functionally are identical and may be used interchangeably.

  2. How can Product No. A5758, Antifoam Y-30 Emulsion be used?

    1 answer
    1. This antifoam can be diluted with water. It is effective at low concentrations (1-100 ppm is the usual range to use). Trials can start at 50 ppm (active silicone), and amounts may be reduced to where the level of foam control is desired. The product should be agitated before use.

  3. What is the difference between product A5758, Antifoam Y-30 emulsion and product A6457?

    1 answer
    1. Product A6457, a molecular biology reagent, has been function-tested by Sigma for use in bacterial fermentation. Product A5758 has not been tested in this application by Sigma.

      Helpful?

  4. Has there been a name change for Antifoam Y-30 Emulsion, Product A5758?

    1 answer
    1. Yes. The product was formerly listed under the name "Antifoam A Emulsion".  Although there has been a name change, there is no change in the composition of the antifoam. It is the same product.

  5. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

    1 answer
    1. Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.

      Helpful?

  6. Can Antifoam Y-30 Emulsion, Product A5758, be autoclaved?

    1 answer
    1. Dow Corning® does not recommend that the emulsion be autoclaved since autoclaving can adversely affect the product.

  7. What is Antifoam Y-30 emulsion?

    1 answer
    1. Antifoam Y-30 emulsion,a Dow-Corning product, is a 30% active silicone emulsion, whose usage is intended for controlling foam in aqueous systems. The composition of the antifoam is considered proprietary by the manufacturer.  However, the emulsifier type is described as nonionic.
