General description
Ceramide is a sphingolipid metabolite. It is composed of sphingosine base linked via amide linkage to a fatty acid.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Ceramide plays a role in cell signaling processes, such as cell cycle arrest and promotes apoptosis. It is also involved in signal transduction processes and insulin resistance. Ceramide also plays a role in cell proliferation, differentiation and inflammatory responses.
