General description

1-Undecanethiol (UDT) is an alkanethiol that forms a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on a variety of surfaces. It immobilizes the surface atoms and enhances the absorption of proteins. It can be synthesized by reacting bromo-1-undecanol and thiourea and subsequent purification using ethyl acetate.[1][2]

Application

UDT can be used to functionalize polycarbonate filter membrane for immunological experiments which can further be used in the fabrication of plasmonic flow through biosensor based applications.[2] SAM of UDT can be used in the colloidal gold enhanced immunoassay.[3] It may be used to form SAM on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) gold electrodes which can be used as adhesive intermediate layers.[4]
Used to form hydrophilic SAMs and in mixed SAMs as spacers to provide a hydrophilic background. Also can be used to reduce non-specific protein adsorption.

Aptamers are chemically synthesized oligonucleotides or peptides with molecular recognition capabilities. We investigated recognition of substrate-tethered small-molecule targets, using neurotransmitters as examples, and fluorescently labeled DNA aptamers. Substrate regions patterned via microfluidic channels with dopamine or   l-tryptophan were selectively recognized
