General description

1,2-Bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane (BTME) is a bridged alkoxysilane that can be used as an organosilica based precursor that forms mesoporous materials. It can be prepared by hydrolyzing the alkoxy groups with Si-OH to form Si-O-Si structure.

Application

BTME can be used to synthesize a shell based nanocomposite for potential application in drug delivery and encapsulation. It can also form magnetic hollow spheres which find usage in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Functionalized mesoporous silica was synthesized from 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane.{27}
