General description

Palmitic acid (PA), a saturated fatty acid present in the human body, accounts for 20-30% of total fatty acids (FA) in membrane phospholipids (PL) and adipose triacylglycerols (TAG). It is one of the main components of palm oil however, significant amounts of PA are also found in meat and dairy products, cocoa butter, and olive oil. PA is also present in breast milk. PA performs various fundamental biological functions at cellular and tissue levels.

Application

Palmitic acid has been used:
  • to study its effects on monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) expression in adipocytes and THP-1 macrophages
  • to stimulate lipotoxicity in primary rat hepatocytes
  • in Et-bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution along with retinoic acid (RA) and retinol to study its effects on spermatogenesis or meiotic progression

Saturated fatty acids (SFAs) induce hepatocyte cell death, wherein oxidative stress is mechanistically involved.
