Application
3′,3″,5′,5″-Tetrabromophenolphthalein ethyl ester (TBPE) is an anionic dye used as a counter ion in the spectrophotometric determination of cationic surfactants. TBPE is also used in the spectrometric determination of aliphatic primary, secondary and tertiary amines.

A simple direct colorimetric test using a tetrabromophenolphthalein reagent for detecting basic drugs in urine is described. The response of 62 commonly encountered drugs and metabolites to this test are described and 39 of these compounds were found to react.
