General description

Zinc chloride is a strongly hygroscopic deliquescentsolid widely used as a Lewis acid catalyst in a variety of organictransformations.

Application

Zinc chloride is used as a catalyst:
  • in Knoevenagel condensation of carbonyl substrates with acidic methylene reagents
  • in solvent-free synthesis of dihydropyrimidinones.
It may be used as chemical activating agents, zinc chloride in particular is the most widely used chemical in the preparation of activated carbon.
