Gene Information

General description

CNGB1, also known as Cyclic nucleotide-gated cation channel beta-1, Cyclic nucleotide-gated cation channel 4 (CNG4), Cyclic nucleotide-gated cation channel gamma, Cyclic nucleotide-gated cation channel modulatory subunit, Cyclic nucleotide-gated channel beta-1, or Glutamic acid-rich protein (GARP), and encoded by the gene CNGB1/CNCG2/CNCG3L/CNCG4/RCNC2, is a subunit of cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channels which are nonselective cation channels expressed in retinal and olfactory neurons. The CNG channels play important roles in both visual and olfactory signal transduction. When associated with CNGA1, CNGB1 is involved in the regulation of ion flow into the rod photoreceptor outer segment (ROS), in response to light-induced alteration of the levels of intracellular cGMP. CNGB1 is localized in the plasma membranes of expressing cells and mediates the ion transport of the channel. Mutations in CNGB1 are associated with the genetic disease retinitis pigmentosa 45 that is a progressive vision disease associated with the loss of rod and cone photoreceptors.
