General description

Cholesterol is one of the important constituent of all membranes. It is made up of a hydrophobic, planar, a polar hydroxyl group, fused-ring nucleus and a short hydrocarbon tail.

Application

Cholesterol-PEG 600 has been used to evaluate its ability to induce apoptosis in vascular smooth muscle cells. It has also been used to restore cholesterol following depletion by methyl β-cyclodextrin.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cholesterol acts as an antecedent of steroid hormones. It plays a key role in fetal growth and in brain development.

Physical form

semisolid to solid

Preparation Note

Prepared by method of Proksch, G.J., and Bonderman, D.P., Clin. Chem., 24, 1924 (1978).

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. Hello, I would like to know how to dissolve product C1145 in water, and what its maximum solubility in water is? Thank you!

    1 answer
    1. The solubility of this product is tested at 60 mg/mL in water. This material dissolves readily in water, however the maximum rate has not been investigated. Note that this material contains a minimum of 20% Cholesterol.

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  4. こんにちは こちらの製品に含まれているPEG600の割合を可能な範囲で教えていただくことは可能でしょうか。 お手数をおかけいたしますが、よろしくお願いいたします。

    1 answer
    1. There is not a formal molecular weight provided for this product.

      Cholesterol molecular weight = 386.65 g/mole.
      Sebacic Acid molecular weight = 202.25 g/mole
      PEG molecular weight = ~600 g/mole.

Based on one cholesterol, one sebacic acid "linker" and one PEG (molecular weight 600) per molecule of C1145, one can calculate an approximate molecular weight of 1188 g/mole.

The approximate amount of PEG based upon this weight is 600/1150 or ~52%.
