as a component in superoxide dismutase (SOD)-inhibitable ferricytochrome c reduction assay
as a component in selection of chimeric Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA)
as a substrate in the reaction mixture for xanthine oxidase assay

Xanthine possesses therapeutic properties. It acts as a mild stimulant of the central nervous system.
