Description

General description

Legionella Agar Base is aspecialized microbiological culture medium designed for the detection,isolation, and enumeration of Legionella species from water samples. Itis formulated according to ISO 11731 standards, ensuring compliance withinternational guidelines for water quality testing. The medium contains yeastextract to provide the necessary nitrogenous nutrients for Legionellagrowth. Activated charcoal nullifies toxic compounds that either accumulate inthe medium during growth or develop during sterilization of medium. Addition ofACES buffer helps in maintaining proper pH of the medium for the optimal growth of Legionella.

Application

Legionella Agar Base with the addition of supplement is used for thepresumptive identification of Legionella species. It is widely used inenvironmental monitoring and water testing workflows. It is ideal forregulatory compliance testing, particularly in industries such as watertreatment, healthcare, and environmental safety. The medium is suitable forisolating Legionella pneumophila and other Legionella speciesfrom water samples, including cooling towers, potable water systems, and otherwater sources.

Preparation Note

Suspend 12.5 grams in 450 ml distilled water. Heat to boiling to dissolve the medium completely. Sterilize by autoclaving at 15 lbs pressure (121°C) for 15 minutes. Cool to 50°C and aseptically add contents of 1 vial of Legionella BCYE Supplement without L-Cysteine (Cat. No. 43753).
