Biochem/physiol Actions

VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) is a potent angiogenic cytokine. It stimulates proliferation and migration of endothelial cells. VEGF induces microvascular permeability by enhancing function of vesicular-vacuolar organelle (VVO). VEGF plays a prominent role in both normal and pathological angiogenesis. Substantial evidence suggests that VEGF is involved in the induction of tumor metastasis and intraocular neovascular syndromes. Increased expression of VEGF causes retinal angiogenesis, thus, inhibition of VEGF using soluble VEGF-receptor chimeric proteins can be considered as a potential therapy for ischemic retinal disease. Polymorphism in VEGF at C (-634) G is linked with diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes. Altered expression of VEGF is also associated with rheumatoid arthritis, Graves′ disease, psoriasis, cardiovascular disease, and peripheral limb disease.

The role of DNA methylation has not been enough explored in pathophysiology of diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, according to recent reports it has been inferred that hypermethylation could be one of the principle cause associated with the enhancement of DN.
