General description

D-ribo-Phytosphingosine is a stereoisomer of phytosphingosine. D-ribo-phytosphingosine is present mainly in the membranes of fungi, plants, bacteria, marine organisms, and mammalian tissues.

Application

D-ribo-Phytosphingosine has been used to determine its ability to rescue the growth defect of the PFA4 deletion strain (pfa4Δ) in response to myriocin. It has also been used to capture phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2), phosphatidylinositol triphosphate (PI(3,4,5)P3), phosphatidyl serine (PS) and phosphatidyl choline (PC) liposomes on a carboxymethyl dextran chip (CMDHchip). It may be used for the preparation of lipids.

Biochem/physiol Actions

D-ribo-phytosphingosine modulates cellular growth and acts as a precursor for several lipid mediators, such as phytosphingosine (PHS) 1-phosphate, inositol phosphorylceramide and KRN7000 (α-anomer of galactosylceramide). It helps in mediating the heat stress response of yeast cells.
