Methyl jasmonate (MJ, MeJA), a methyl ester of jasmonic acid (JA) is a plant growth regulator. It is a fragrant volatile compound isolated from the flowers of Jasminum grandiflorum.[1] It has been reported to play an important role in the plant′s response to pathogens and wound.[2]

Application

Methyl jasmonate (MJ, MeJA) is suitable in controlling blue mold decay in sweet cherry fruit caused by Penicillium expansum.[3]

Methyl jasmonate may be used in the following studies:
  • As a potential anti-cancer agent that shows selective cytotoxic effect towards cancer cells.[4]
  • To induce the defensive proteinase inhibitor proteins synthesis in plant leaves.[5]
  • As an elicitor to enrich the total anthocyanin content (TAC) in radish sprouts.[6]
  • As an elicitor in inducing the biosynthesis of trans-resveratrol, a plant phenol in Vitis vinifera cv. Negramaro cell cultures.[7]
  • As a mediator of extensive plant transcriptome reprogramming/ remodeling on exogenous treatment to Salvia sclarea leaves.[8]
  • As a modulator in the expression of chalcone synthase (chs) and proline-rich cell wall protein (PRP), two wound-responsive genes in soybean suspension cultures.[2]
  • As a starting material in the synthesis of [13C,2H3]-MeJA, an internal standard used in the quantitative determination of MeJA in plant tissues.[2]
  • As a test compound in the application of reduced graphene oxide–poly(safranine T) film on glassy carbon electrode (rGO–PST/GCE) in the electrochemical determination of MeJA in jasmine essential oil.[9]

    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers.   2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
      For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
      For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. Is this product transported cold? Should it be dissolved in ethanol to be used in plant tissue culture media? How much should I add to make it 50 micromolar in 500 ml?

    1. This product is not transported cold; it is shipped at ambient temperature, and it can be stored at room temperature upon receipt. _x000D_
      It can be dissolved in ethanol to make a stock solution prior to final dilution into culture medium. It is not recommended to store solutions in ethanol; Methyl jasmonate could transesterify to Ethyl jasmonate if stored in ethanol. It is not recommended to make stock solutions in methanol, since it is likely more toxic to the cultured plants than ethanol._x000D_
      Dissolving 5.4 microliters of Methyl jasmonate in 5 mL of ethanol will give a 5 mM stock solution. Adding that 5 mL of stock to 500 mL of culture medium will make the medium 50 micromolar in Methyl jasmonate.

  4. I have received methyl jasmonate (392707-5ml). My questions are; what is its storage temperature? In which solution it is dissolved? How could I prepare 1M solution of this chemical?

    1. The recommended long-term storage for this product is tightly closed at room temperature. This product is supplied as a neat or pure liquid with a literature density of 1.03 g/mL and a molecular weight of 224.30 g/mol. The minimum purity is 94.5 %, thus, the molarity will vary slightly from lot to lot. The molarity can range from 4.34 M (94.5%) to 4.59 M (100%). The lot-specific purity is reported on the Certificate of Analysis.

    1. This product is a neat or pure liquid with a density of 1.03 g/mL and a molecular weight of 224.30 g/mol. The minimum purity of this product is 95% as determined by GC. At the minimum purity the molarity of this product is 4.4 M. The material is soluble in water and may be readily diluted to the desired concentration.
