Application

Human cyclin-dependent kinase 5 has been used in a study to determine its 3′ untranslated region subunit 1 contains regulatory elements that affect transcript stability.

Biochem/physiol Actions

CDK5 is highly expressed in the nervous system where it phosphorylates a multitude of substrates. CDK5 plays an important role in many processes such as: apoptosis, phototransduction, dopamine and glutamate signalling, neurite outgrowth, neurone migration, induction of acetylcholine receptors, golgi membrane traffic and insulin exocytosis. It has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis . It is activated by p35 and p39, and their proteolytic cleavage products, p25 and p29.

Unit Definition

One unit will phosphorylate 1.0 picomole of the peptide substrate histone H19-18 per minute at 30 °C at pH 7.4.

The maturation and maintenance of dendritic spines depends on neuronal activity and protein synthesis. One potential mechanism involves mammalian target of rapamycin, which promotes protein synthesis through phosphorylation of eIF4E-binding protein and p70 ribosomal S6 kinase 1 (S6K).
