General description

N-terminal HIS-tagged fusion protein corresponding to full-length Green Fluorescent Protein, expressed in E. coli. Green fluorescent protein (GFP) is a cytoplasmic protein found in jellyfish Aequorea Victoria.[1]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Green fluorescent protein (GFP) is genetically fused to many proteins in various species to generate non-reactive chimeras which are known to preserve their original biological activity as well as the fluorescent properties of native GFP. GFP acts as a reporter for gene expression and as a fusion tag for protein localization studies in live cells.[1] It serves as a spectroscopic and microscopic probe to understand the biological functions of various systems.[2] GFP is highly stable and can serve as a tool for in vitro studies.[1]

Routinely evaluated as a standard on protein gels and western immunoblots, for calibration of fluorometers, and microinjection into cells and tissues.

    1. eGFP stands for enhanced green fluorescent protein, a red-shifted mutant of GFP, which folds more efficiently and fluoresces more intensely than wild-type GFP. This product corresponds to the green fluorescent protein (GFP) isolated from the jellyfish, Aequorea victoria.

      GFP absorbs blue light (maximum 395 nm, smaller absorbance peak at 470 nm) and emits green light (maximum 507-510 nm, shoulder at 545 nm) (PubMed:8137953, PubMed:9154981). The exact value of the emission maximum depends on the environment of the chromophore (PubMed:10220315).
