General description

Sodium salicylate is the active ingredient in aspirin, commonly used as antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug. Sodium salicylate when taken in large quantities causes temporary hearing loss and tinnitus. Prolonged treatment with sodium salicylate reduces output from cochlea permanently, reduces compound action potential amplitude in vivo and neural degeneration in vitro. Sodium salicylate treatment in lateral amygdala alters tonography and excitability, causing hyperactivity in auditory cortex. Sodium salicylate impairs the expression of cellular-Finkel−Biskis−Jinkins murine osteogenic sarcoma virus (c-fos) and δ-FosB proteins in hippocampus region and affects spatial memory and learning. Sodium salicylate affects neurogenesis in dentate gyrus region of the brain.

Application

Sodium salicylate has been used:
  • to induce tinnitus, hyperacusis-like behavior in rats and infused directly into amygdala to measure local field potential.
  • to induce and confirm tinnitus by prepulse inhibition behavior (PPI) and its inhibition on learning and memory by Morris water maze test and subsequent gene expression studies in rats.
  • to enhance gamma amino butyric acid (GABA)ergic inhibition and enhance auditory response in the dorsal cortex of the inferior colliculus (ICd) measured by microiontophoretic technique.

In plants, pathogen effector-triggered immunity (ETI) often leads to programmed cell death, which is restricted by NPR1, an activator of systemic acquired resistance. However, the biochemical activities of NPR1 enabling it to promote defense and restrict cell death remain unclear.
