General description

L-Glutamic acid/monosodium glutamate (MSG) is the sodium salt of glutamic acid. It is a commonly used food additive.

Application

L-Glutamic acid monosodium salt hydrate has been used:
  • to prepare glutamate stock solution in HEPES-buffered saline (HBS) for glutamate perfusions
  • as a component in YNG (yeast nitrogen base glutamate) medium
  • used to treat HT22 hippocampal cells to study its effects on cell viability and to examine the expression of molecules related to apoptotic cell death
  • as a component of fresh media to culture neurons and to assess glutamate uptake

Biochem/physiol Actions

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a food additive and an environmental agent, that can affect inflammation.
Agonist at kainate, NMDA, and quisqualate receptors; an excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter.
