General description

Lidocaine is an amide anesthetic, which is used to treat ventricular arrhythmias. It lowers cardiac automaticity and myocardial conduction. Lidocaine inhibits the generation and conduction of nerve impulses. It has an anticonvulsant effect.

Application

Lidocaine has been used to examine its effects in inhibiting lymph flow and protection against envenomation. It has also been used to assess its efficacy as an anti-tussive agent.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Na+ channel blocker; class IB antiarrhythmic that is rapidly absorbed after parenteral administration.
